Siliguri - The Gateway to Amazing Northeast India

Siliguri - The Gateway to Amazing Northeast India - Siliguri first gave the impression of a sleepy city, the day we traveled to the Hotel Impees from the New Jalpaiguri train station with an autorickshaw. Even though we had to pay through our noses, the trip was indeed fun because the residents of this city were slowly getting out of their beds.

The weather is cool and refreshing when the majestic Kanchenjunga shines with a silvery aura in the distance. Our idea of   a sleepy city turned out to be wrong when the day opened. The hustle and bustle, in general is the contribution of autorickshaws, bicycle rickshaws, bicycles and worn-out buses that jostle for space on the road.

The emergence of Siliguri as the main center began since most of the Jalpaiguri district was washed away in 1968. Siliguri, sandwiched between Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling district, is a transit point to destinations such as Nepal, Bhutan, Gangtok and Darjeeling.

Bogdarga Airport, located on the outskirts of the city, offers tourists from other states and abroad a very good stop on the way to all cities in North-East that are connected by air. The Mahananda River, which flows through the city, is the main attraction. Interesting places for tourists in this city though are limited to the Kali temple and several points of view along the banks of Mahananda.

Our hotel receptionist suggests bringing the autorickshaw to Sevok, which is located on the outskirts of the city. This turned out to be a very good idea when we rode from the hustle and bustle of the city to breathtaking beautiful scenery and kept forest tracts on both sides of the road to Sevok. A few kilometers after moving out of town, the traffic thinned dramatically as we entered the Mahananda wildlife sanctuary.

The flora and fauna here are unique. Conservation activities have begun in earnest to preserve whatever is left after poaching and uncontrolled felling of trees has left far less reserves. The forestry department gives tourists the opportunity to enjoy elephant rides through the forest.

Our first stop was the bride crossing the Nandi river which was actually a branch of Mahananda when the river split into and flowed in two different directions around the hill. The riverbed is not completely dry because it flows along the river bank. The view is stunning with the bride rail in the background adding a romantic touch.

It's time to move because we have a tight schedule. Three and a half kilometers up we reached the stairs leading to the Kali di Sevok temple on the side of the road. This temple is perched on the top of a rocky hill. We choose not to go down here, time is up. Right in front of this is the point where the road splits.

One goes to Sikkim-Gangtok and the other to Assam, The Coronation Bridge which was inaugurated right after coronation ... is located at this point on the road to Assam. A view to be seen, the bridge towering about 400 feet above the Teesta river flows beneath it with a bluish-green tinge. Teesta joins Mahananda a little ahead after that is the Indo-Bangladesh border.

This has been a place of dispute between India and its neighbors for some time. The vast river bed where the two rivers meet resembles a large plain stretching for miles. Looking down from the Coronation Bridge, the waters of the Teesta look clear and inviting. Without a moment, we descended the stairs to the edge of the river.

Spending an hour and a half on the banks of the river, occasionally dipping our feet in water that seemed clear up close was not enough to satisfy our appetite. Spell backgrounds that bind from mountains and intoxicating greenery but unfortunately we were late and it was time to go back.

At night, a few hours before boarding the train to Trivandrum, we visited the Midwife and Hong Kong markets. All imaginable items are available there but the price is very high. Because our host warned us about this, we were not robbed of a lot of money.

The apples and oranges displayed looked fresh and we brought some. Walking back to the hotel, right on the side of the road is the famous Kanchenjunga stadium where football matches between India and the Philippines are underway.

It was 9pm when we arrived at the New Jalpaiguri train station. Steam locomotives are displayed at the station and most of the admirers are children. Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Express is two hours late and the night is getting cold.

When the train finally drove in, I could not help glancing at Kanchenjunga, who had lured the previous days, now overwhelmed by the shroud of darkness. The experience here, rejuvenates our mind, body, and soul, will be tested by time, I say to myself, sitting in a roll of blanket on the dock to sleep well.
